Work progressively to strengthen the legs, the hip

Work progressively to strengthen the legs, the hips, and the back for Laghuvajrasana. Start off with two blocks, Beninese, reach back towards the angles, and lightly touched the head to the blocks.

Avoid thinking “up” when it’s time to come up. Instead send the pelvis forward into the strength of the legs.

Avoid pulling with the arms when it’s time to come back up. Instead push firmly down into the heels of the hands and let that strength help. You travel forward with the entire body.

once the movement feels comfortable on two blocks, try with one block, and finally try without any blocks. Don’t be alarmed if this takes a few years of practice. Expect your legs to be burning throughout the entire movement and quite sore after.

What and how we see is so influenced by our state

What and how we see is so influenced by our state of mind. Many people can experience the same event and take away entirely different things. If we mistake our small slice of reality for ultimate truth it is both delusional and problematic. Instead, when we realize that what we see is only a portion of a bigger grander reality, we find humility and grace all around us.

We saw the Mysore Palace for the first time from the inside today. We have only ever seen it from the outside. The change in perspective is as absolutely beautiful.

Working the body with sensitivity to subtle sensat

Working the body with sensitivity to subtle sensations, attention to anatomical detail and an attitude of non-attachment is often the magic mix to evolve our practice.

Without awareness of the subtlety the body’s quiet voice can get drowned out. We may not truly listen and if we cannot hear the body’s way of communicating with us, then our chances of injury increase dramatically.

Without anatomical knowledge, we are like the blind leading the blind in the territory of our body. It’s not only intellectual knowledge that helps, it’s applied understanding of the body in motion that brings a deep kind of somatic intelligence.

Without non-attachment, we get hung up what poses we are doing and not doing and mistake the technique for the goal. If we get attached to a particular result in a particular timeframe, we may push too hard, get frustrated and build resentment.

Instead, if follow the wisdom of the ancient teachings and find the perfect mix of effort and surrender, the state of inner stillness will flow through us.

The motivation to practice comes from a combinatio

The motivation to practice comes from a combination of internal and external factors.

Sometimes we get inspired by the community of students. New students bring fresh energy. More experienced students bring depth and perspective.

Sometimes being around our teacher is the spark we need to light the path for us. There is nothing that compares with bring guided by a master of the tradition.

Sometimes we have to motivate ourselves. There are days when we will practice alone with no one to watch over us or check in on us. In those private moments of personal practice we develop a very strong sadhana.

When there is a perfect mix of internal and external elements of motivation, we are blessed. Those rare moments when everything lined up are good times to be cherished and appreciated.

When things don’t work out and everything seems against us, that too is a good opportunity to practice. Developing a steady mind that faces obstacles with equanimity is one of the key tenets of yoga.

No matter what is seen on the surface, yoga remain

No matter what is seen on the surface, yoga remains an entirely personal inner experience. The feeling of breath, body and mind are essentially private. Only we know the truth of what is unfolding as we step on the mat. There is no way anyone can judge your practice from the outside looking in. Instead, what we can do js give each other the space to practice and go through whatever we need to go through in order to grow, evolve and learn.

Sometimes progress is steady and linear. That usually feels good. But more often progress is circular and erratic. That frequently feels confusing and frustrating. But progress it is nevertheless. Even when we think we aren’t doing well, as long as we keep practicing we are doing something what needs to be done.

A lifelong practice is not measured in handstands and backbends. A lifelong practice is a persistent twisting towards peace.

Yoga is a state of mind not disturbed by the pairs

Yoga is a state of mind not disturbed by the pairs of opposing forces. Maybe Jack Kornfield says it perfectly when he says, after the ecstasy, then the laundry.

After the most divine high comes an abysmal low. After boundless hope comes a wave of hate. Light and dark. Pleasure and pain. Good and bad. Contrast.

Not only do we go on dividing and dissecting the world according pairs of opposites, but we mistake this dualism for the truth. While it certainly feels true on this plane of existence, this physical body is not all of who we are. Yes, there is suffering in this world. And yes, there is also joy. The two do not necessarily create equivalence.

Sometimes I feel like sitting with the discomfort of all the seemingly contradictory thoughts and experiences that life delivers is the essence of the spiritual path. Making peace with who we are is less about being perfect and more about growing our mind big enough to hold divergence in love.
